What is Positive Behaviour Support and what can I expect?
Positive Behaviour support (PBS) is a person centered framework to providing support in situations where there are behaviours of concern. At its core, PBS understands that behaviour happens for a reason and it involves a holistic approach to understanding behaviours, mitigating risks and teaching new skills.
PBS is a blend of values & science. Key values include a commitment to providing support that:
- Shows respect for diversity
- Promotes inclusion
- Increases choice
- Promotes equality of opportunity and human rights
Advancements can only be made once we have a really good understanding of the functions of the behaviour (as otherwise, it’s simply a bandaid approach). Whilst approaches are tailored to individual needs, the approach often looks like this:
